If you’re looking for a place to stay in Moscow, there’s plenty of selection. Western-run hotels are, as a rule, very expensive. There are 3 Marriott’s in Moscow – all very nice inside and out, centrally located, and all over $150/night. There’s Radisson, located near the American Embassy (around $150/night) and Sheraton Palace in the city center (over $200/night). Holiday Inn (around $110/night) also made it to Moscow, but is a good drive away from the city center. There are over 50 Moscow hotels with detailed descriptions and pictures listed on our hotel server - Hotels in Russia and Hotels in Ukraine
If personal butler is not required, or you just want to stay in a place that has all the basic amenities, centrally located and is safe, we can recommend the following:
Hotel Ukraina*** - one of the 7 “wedding cake” buildings right across from the Russian White House. We like their service, Russian buffet breakfast (our exclusive special does not include it) and think they offer the best value for your dollar.
Hotel Intourist*** - an old, but perfectly located right outside the Red Square. Location, location, location (well, we like the price, too).
Hotel Belgrad*** - another older Russian-run hotel, offers great value for your buck, and is a walking distance from both the American Embassy and the famous touristy “Arbat” pedestrian area.
If your hotel is not in the very center, but only a 5-15 minute ride away, don’t worry. Everyone with a car is a taxi driver nowadays in Moscow. Most of the time you wouldn’t have to wait more than 30 seconds trying to hail a cab before someone stops. There are very few original taxicabs left in Moscow, and they usually are not very pretty looking. Still, they should be comfortable inside and their drivers are very knowledgeable. Be cautious getting into expensive, new cars – it’s unusual for a well-to-do Russian to offer a lift to a hitchhiker. Also, never get in a cab or a car if there are several people inside!
